Washington: Judd & Detweiler, 1883. 2nd ed. Paperback. 36p. No separate wrapper present. 21 cm. Old staple holes at top and bottom along left side suggest that this pamphlet was removed at some point from later covers or a binder. Former owner's name, unreadable to us, in upper left corner. A small chip and some other wear and on outer leaves but overall a sound copy. Crummell. an African American born in New York City, attended various American institutions including a year at Yale and was ordained in the Episcopal Church, serving a church briefly in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1853 and spent almost two decades in Liberia as an Episcopal cleric and an educator. Crummell returned to the United States in 1872 and was pastor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., from 1879 to 1898. The first edition of this pamphlet appears to have also been published in 1883 -- we don't know if there were any textual differences between the two "editions" other than the addition of "Second edition" on the title-page. Good. Item #95381
