Item #95413 Paul Laurence Dunbar Male Quartette and Jubilee Singers material

Paul Laurence Dunbar Male Quartette and Jubilee Singers material

Syracuse, N. Y. Empire Lyceum Bureau, Inc., ca. 1909. Includes: (1) four-page promotional brochure (28 cm.); (2) form letter from Empire Lyceum Bureau dated Oct. 12, 1909 seeking bookings for this group; (3) two typed carbon copy clips containing re-typed testimonials for this group from their recent appearances in two small communities (Adams Center and Black River) in upstate New York; and (4) postmarked envelope (Oct. 12, 1909 addressed to Prin. Union School Glasco, New York) in which all of the other items were enclosed. This material was found encased between two heavy sheets of plastic and attached around parts of edges with some kind of stubborn adhesive. Small corners on the envelope and back leaf of the brochure perished during their removal and there are some shiny remnants of the adhesive. We know next to nothing about this group and could find nothing online. All four members of the quartette are described as having attended various African American colleges (Bennett, Claflin and Fisk). The fact that the Lyceum was seeking bookings in small communities suggest that this group was not in high demand despite the use of Dunbar's impressive name. Good. Item #95413
