1866-1875. Autograph letters on sheets of various sizes ranging from 14 x 11 cm to 22 x 16 cm. Most letters have fold creases. Handwriting by Mary and the other correspondents is generally neat although some of the crosswriting can be hard to read. The letter to her husband dated Nov. 17, 1873 has top 1/3 portion detached at fold and is otherwise intact although on thin paper and rather fragile. No envelopes are present. Mary's husband was a protestant missionary doctor who functioned mostly in the Armenian and Kurdish regions of Turkey between 1854 and 1875. His wife's letters are written to him from Kessab, a town or region now in northwestern Syria. The letter are not full of religiosity. Instead, if there is a single theme in her letters, it is her loneliness for her husband and frustration art not knowing exactly where he is. Things are often needed. An 1874 letter asks for a slop pail. Kessab, her place of residence, was then settled by Armenians and seems to have been peaceful. Most of the Armenians living in and near in Kessab in the first quarter of the 20th century were massacred by Turkish Muslims. Very Good. Item #95607
