This pamphlet was "...prepared by Billy L. Bennett of the Muskegon Y.M.C.A. and C.D. McNamee, managing editor of the Muskegon Chronicle." [statement inside front cover]. Walker, a Northern abolitionist who had helped slaves escape from the South, was captured and tried and convicted in a federal court in Pansacola, Florida for his "slave stealing" activities. He was sentenced to have his hand stamped "SS" for slave stealer and also fined and imprisoned. He later traveled in the North as an abolitionist speaker, displaying his branded hand. He settled in Muskegon County, Mishigan, where a monument was erected to honor him after his death in 1878. This pamphlet was issued in Muskegon to honor Walker and the monument which is located in Muskegon near the entrance of the Evergreen Cemetery at 400 Irwin Avenue. Near Fine. Item #96302
